Gypsy MVP welcomes Sundance Kid

Gypsy MVP welcomes Sundance Kid

Sundance Kid is in Texas, and he is proving that he is different from all the other Gypsy stallions that arrived before him. His unique golden buckskin color, his muscular build, and his gentle temperament make him one of a kind in his breed. Sundance stepped off the trailer into the spotlight, appearing on Good Day Houston his first week. Standing center stage calmly nuzzling his new owner Doug Kneis, Sundance created a stir that rivaled the days when the Beatles stepped off the plane into America. The audience clapped and exclaimed over this beautiful colorful stallion who accepted his admirers without a hint of surprise or discomfort. Long haired, curious yet calm, his charm, like Paul McCartney’s voice, caused the crowd to want nothing more than want to be next to him, surrounding the stallion on all sides.

Horse breeder Doug Kneis of Katy, Texas, has imported dozens of rare British Gypsy Vanner horses to the United States over the last several years – but he’s never, he says, had a horse quite like Sundance Kid, the stallion he’s bringing across the Atlantic this month. The 6 year old stallion, dark buckskin with white splashing markings over his belly and chest, is as flashy a horse as any Kneis has seen, but he’s also exceptionally gentle. “A child can handle him,” Kneis recounts. "He’s like a big puppy, actually.”
Gypsy Vanners are a unique breed of small draft horses developed by Romany Gypsies. The gypsies have no permanent homes but travel around Great Britain with travel trailers or horse-drawn wagons, and these colorful, strong and exceptionally gentle small draft horses are in intrinsic part of the nomad’s culture. Because the animals' traditional work is pulling gypsy wagons which contain both family and all worldly possessions, the Gypsy Vanner's temperament and gentleness is paramount. Showy color and bearing are important too, for gypsies are nothing if not flamboyant and horse-proud.

After becoming interested in the breed and building a 50-horse breeding and resale operation in Katy, Texas, Kneis has been searching Britain for the ideal Gypsy Vanner. A breeder in the central part of the United Kingdom located Sundance Kid, but there is some mystery about where exactly the horse was foaled. “The gypsies, when they’ve got a special horse, they keep it a secret.” Kneis says.

Traditionally, pedigrees of Gypsy Vanner horses are verbal only, though once recorded as a Gypsy Vanner with an American registry, records for the horse’s offspring will be kept. Sundance Kid will be standing at stud to a limited number of mares this year, at a stud fee of $3000. See www.gypsymvp.com for more info.

Fairy-Tale Horses Making Inroads in America KATY, Texas,

June 30 /PRNewswire/ -- Two weeks ago, Texas oilman Doug Kneis imported his latest shipment of Gypsy Vanner horses, which have been selectively bred for over 100 years by the Romany Gypsies. These horses were born and bred in the English countryside but will now take up residence at Gypsy MVP, Kneis' operation in Katy, Texas (http://www.gypsymvp.com). The new horses will join Kneis' already well-developed herd of the unique and rare breed. Gypsy Vanners are beautiful, showy small draft horses. Over the last decade, these horses have trickled into the United States in response to keen enthusiasm on the part of breeders and buyers. In 1999 there were fewer than 100 Vanners in America. Currently, there are approximately 1300. The Gypsy Vanner Horse Society was founded in 2004 to keep records of the breed and promote the horses. The horses have the appearance of a fairy-tale animal, with their colorful coats often black and white or brown and white (called Piebald and Skewbald in English parlance). They have massive manes and tails and their lower legs are covered with long flowing hair or "feathers" typical of English draft horses. The Vanner is distinctive not only because of its appearance, but because it is so gentle, says Kneis. "The English Gypsies bred these horses to pull their caravans; they raised their children around them." The horses had to be bombproof, unfazed by flapping cloth and loud noises that would send other breeds skittering. "When you've got everything you own hitched to a wagon behind a horse, you can't have that horse spooking," he points out. Kneis became interested in the breed one day when he saw an image of one of the horses on a horse treats package. He didn't believe the picture could be of a real animal, and once he got involved with the breed, he couldn't slow down. He founded Gypsy MVP to manage the care, buying and selling of his animals and promote the breed. The company currently has approximately two dozen Gypsy Vanner horses for sale. "These horses are like a drug," Kneis says. "There's just something about their sweet, almost human personality that gets to you. I've owned a lot of breeds, always loved horses, but the Gypsy Vanner horses are different."
